The Awakening is a dark comedy that concerns the conflict between a
reclusive crone, her sensitive but criminal son, and his psychopathic
girlfriend. Bernard (Misha Grey), an ex-con holed up in his mother’s cabin
in the desert, is planning his next bank job. His girlfriend, Esmeralda
(Naia Venturi), an ex-cheerleader on drugs, roller-skates around the cabin,
urging him to kill his eighty-year-old mother (Kate Ritter), who knits an
interminably long black scarf and rambles on about another era when
criminals knew what they were doing. The Awakening is a modern re-working of
the Orestes legend and a homage to classic film noir.
